Over the weekend Cody and I finally got to sit down and play two games of Cyberpunk Combat Zone. This game is nothing short of a blast to play, but boy does it go fast.

This is the two player starter box that I picked up from The Deep in Huntsville Al. It was about 125, but the terrain was worth it to me, and the models would get used in necromunda. So why the hell not?

The contents of the box were amazing, and after reading the rules I knew what everything did. I played with the Malestorms and Cody used the Tygers. I really enjoy the different dice aspect of the game, it makes for a lot of depth to your turns. The risk of using your green dice to defend from a yellow dice makes sense, until dice are dice! Now your green dice is a red dice, but that’s how it is on the luke-warm streets of a tabletop near you!

We threw together a few of the characters together and equiped them with what we thought was best. We both had 100 points worth of dudes and upgrades. The mission was Mule, I was the defender trying to get one of my guys to safety. He had to get medication to the sick children, but Cody had other plans!

The reaction system is by far what sets this game apart from any other game on the market. After you take a wound, if you have an available action, you pause your opponents turn to make an activation with that model. You can do anything depending on if your in base to base contact with your opponents models. Hands down the coolest thing is using that activation to activate another one of your guys. Pretty much you slap the wrong guy, and you’re going to have to deal with someone you didn’t count on hitting you just yet.

Another wild aspect of this game is when you go to refresh your action tokens, you may do it when ever. You simply inspire your team, reset activations, activate gonks if you have any, then pass turn. What we found out is that this puts a tremendous amount of pressure on your opponent, if they don’t do that, then they are going to start falling behind.
Combine that with some group activations and you have the recipe for a skirmish game, that I feel matches a card game beautifully. Look for more info on this game in the future, and look for the models being painted! Hope everyone has a great Monday! Stay classy wargamers
